Description
Burbage Brook flows through densely wooded Padley Gorge on the National Trust’s Longshaw Estate. Yarncliffe Wood is a remnant of the mixture of sessile oak (Quercus petraea) and silver birch (Betula pendula) that once covered all the valley slopes and edges of the Dark Peak. Alder (Alnus glutinosa), which belongs to the birch family, grows in the wet margins around the stream. There is a large percentage of oak growing here because it was deliberately planted to supply timber for the charcoal powered Sheffield iron industry.
