Description

In spring the newly emerging foliage of sessile oak (Quercus petraea) is a warm golden green, which looks especially vibrant against a deep blue sky. Oaks are the dominant tree species in Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Sessile oaks occur more commonly than English oak (Q. robur) within the upland oak-birch woodlands that are found in this part of The Pennines.
