Description

Sessile oak (Quercus petraea) is the more common of the two native oak species found here in Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, the other being English oak (Q. robur).  These newly emerging leaves appear on shoots growing directly from the main trunk, rather than on a branch, a phenomenon known as epicormic growth.
