Description
Winnats Pass in Derbyshire is a deep and steep-sided channel cut into Carboniferous reef limestone formed on the ocean floor around 350 million years ago. It is the only route west out of Castleton in the Hope Valley and, due to its 1:5 gradient, is often impassable in winter. The name Winnats is a corruption of ‘windygates’, which is entirely appropriate for this rugged and exposed location.
