Description

Binevenagh, in County Londonderry, is at the western edge of the Antrim Plateau, a large upland area formed from erupted basalt overlooking a low-lying coastal plain.  The volcanic rock overlies softer sedimentary beds and where these have suffered erosion the basalt has slipped downhill, forming a strange landscape that was once mistaken for a huge defensive fort by invading Vikings.
