Description

Late afternoon light reveals textures within Thwaite Scars limestone pavement, defining the strange shapes within the eroded rock that appear almost deliberately sculpted.  However, the formations were created by the scraping action of retreating glaciers and the weaker areas of exposed limestone dissolving in water, leaving behind flat slabs or clints and deep grikes, which are home to interesting plant species including the blue moor grass (Sesleria caerulea) seen here.
