Description

The long, toothed leaves of sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) growing in Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield. This tree was introduced into Britain from Southern Europe and was planted in these woods around 200 years ago as a fast-growing alternative to oak. Sweet chestunt coppices well and is still grown commercially in parts of southern England.
