Description

Although chocolate vine (Akebia quinata) hails from the Far East, it is surprisingly at home in British gardens. It is a vigorous climber, extending for many metres, and will grow in partial shade. It has unusual waxy flowers borne on dangling racemes and leaves comprised of five leaflets – hence ‘quinata’. The common name refers to the sweet chocolate-vanilla smell exuded by the flowers.
