Willow (Salix spp.) catkin buds making an appearance in Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield. Willow are only found in the parts of the wood where the soils are consistently damp. When the catkins fully burst, they are the earliest-flowering and most nectar-rich species in the woods. Making them vital food plants for many insects.
