Description

English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) growing among beech (Fagus sylvatica) saplings in Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. When beech trees become large and dominant they eventually shade out bluebells and most other wildflowers. This is why beech are selectively managed in these woods, otherwise the bluebell population would suffer.
