Description
This pale sandstone cliifs at Elgol on Skye’s west coast are mainly quartz (silica) and where the mineral is at its densest concentration, the rock is more resistant to chemical weathering by the sea’s corrosive spray. The harder rock maintains ridges that are responsible for the peculiarly organic-looking honeycomb erosion pattern across the cliff face. Below the cliffs are slabs of grey sandstone and assorted pebbles, including granite, which attest to the island’s varied geology.
