Description

Patterns in the dunes at Forvie National Nature Reserve, near Aberdeen, revealed by raking afternoon light.  This is an active dune complex that shifts in response to both the wind and the tide.  Marram (Ammophila arenaria) roots help stablise the sand although the dunes are still particularly vulnerable to erosion, even where the plants form a dense mat.
