Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is not native to northern Britain and was introduced from the south, much like the beech (Fagus sylvatica) it so closely resembles. It was planted in Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield, for both its durable timber and for its attractive ornamental qualities
