Description
Hunstanton is home to a key geological site on the Norfolk coast and is notable for its striking multicolour cliffs. At the base lies Carrstone, a rich brown sandstone, which is overlain by contrasting limestone layers, the ‘Red Chalk’, stained with iron oxide, and also white chalk. Chalk is a subclass of limestone, albeit with a incredibly fine particle size, and both types of rock are composed of tiny fragments of calcium carbonate from the skeletons of ancient marine animals.
