Description
Mweelrea, meaning bald hill in Gaelic, is at 814m the highest point in the Connacht province of Ireland, and lies within County Mayo. The mountain is composed of a mixture of sedimentary and some volcanic rocks of Ordovician age and it rises steeply above Killary Harbour, which is a fjord that follows the course of a fault. The sandstone rocks on the near shore are younger and date from the Silurian period that followed on from the Ordovician.
